Quotes

A passage attributed to a person or organization, optionally tied to the work it came from.

Writing a quote

  • The passage itself, plus a topic tag.
  • Attribute it to a catalog entry from Sources, or type a free-text attribution when the speaker is not in the catalog.
  • If you pick a catalog source, that wins over the free-text field.
  • Optionally tie it to a work and add a locator — a page number, timestamp, or date.

Who can do what

  • Create: signed-in members with the quote role.
  • Edit: only the author of that quote. Quote mods and hub may edit any quote.
  • Delete: quote mods and hub only — authors do not delete their own quotes.

Who can see it

  • Quotes are always public — there is no unpublished / members dial.
  • Browse by tag or catalog source in the left rail (Unattributed covers free-text-only quotes). Clicking a facet lists those quotes in the main column.
  • Unfiltered /quotes lands as a random spotlight or a newest list — your Quotes prefs (gear beside help), overridable with ?pick=random|latest from the rail dice/clock.
  • Share copies a public permalink /q/{id} with image variants (PNG/SVG/…).
  • Bookmark (signed-in) a quote. Random landing draws from your bookmarks when you have any.
  • Thumbs up/down on the quote and on comments. Signed-in only; click again to clear.
